The Central Vermont Railroad was sold at foreclosure on March 21, 1899, and was reorganized as the Central Vermont Railway on May 1. During this process, on April 15, 1899 it purchased the Missisquoi Valley Railroad outright.

The Central Vermont Railway was another of the fabled New England lines. It sliced north to south across the heart of the region, linking Montreal, Quebec with southern Connecticut at New London via St. Albans, Middlesex, Windsor, and Northfield (Massachusetts).

The Vermont Central Railway started at Windsor, VT and run to Burlington over almost the route it follows today. The exception was a section from just west of the Blue Bridge across the Winooski River where the line ran in a deep gully through the center of Burlington and ended near the end of Main Street.
